BICYCLES FOR SCHOOLGIRLS IN SOUTH MOROCCO PROJECT
Objective: to encourage young girls to attending junior high school
Who we are: a French NGO specialising in education issues in South Morocco. Azekka France-Maroc was created by three French women who are fond of Morocco and are willing to help the poorest people in country areas of Morocco.
The issue: Young Moroccan girls give up school because they do not have any means of transportation
In South Morocco only one girl in ten attends junior high school (just after grade school).
The main reason is that junior school is usually far from home and there is no school bus.
For young girls who attend junior high, bicycle is the only way to get there.
In Skouras Oasis where our project takes place, they often have to ride their bicycles all the way to school along dusty, rocky tracks. Very often they come back in the evening after sunset, and ride the last kilometers in the dark.Yet girls do not lack motivation: all they lack is money.
A bicycle or mountain bike costs 56 Euro (75 $ US).
Very few families can afford one (the average daily wage is $4 in this area). A few girls try using one bicycle for two, but 90% give up.
The Solution:
By providing each schoolgirl with a bicycle, we enable them to go to junior high.
How we work:
We work with teachers and local NGOs in the villages. They select a list of young girl recipients who are already accepted in junior high but live far away from it. Then, all year long, they act as a follow-up committee for the project.
We buy bicycles/mountain bikes in Morocco; we choose the best provider with good value for money.
We also help schoolgirls and families by buying school supplies and books, and by creating a school library.

We need your help for 20 schoolgirls in Skoura this year.
We need 20 Bicycles (56 Euro each)
About the 20 schoolgirls
They live in Skoura Oasis, 40 km from Ouarzazat in the south of Morocco.
School (Junior high) is 12 km from home, and some girls have to come back for lunch because there is nowhere to eat and spend the lunchtime break.
To go to school, they cross three rocky dry river beds and a palm tree forest.
It does work !
Last year, thanks to a friend, Rosy, we bought Ghita, a schoolgirl in Skoura, a mountain bike.
She was about to give up school because there was no way her mother could afford a bike.
Thanks to Rosy, Ghita is a successful, happy schoolgirl and her teachers strongly believe she might achieve A-Levels one day.
Other good consequences:
Encouraging 20 schoolgirls does bring a new hope to their families, friends, and also to younger girls attending primary school.
Indeed, why should little girls try their best at primary school if there is no chance they will ever find a way to ride all the way to junior high ?
Having a junior high schoolgirl at home is helpful for illiterate mothers (for reading administrative documents, help in elimination of illiteracy, many pieces of advice and explanations about health&)
